6 Exterior Issues You Should Inspect Before The Fall Weather Hits

Updated: August 18, 2025

As the warm days of summer begin to fade and fall approaches in Connecticut, now is the time for homeowners to shift their focus to preparing their home’s exterior. Seasonal changes can expose—or worsen—underlying issues, especially on the outside of the house. While most people think of leaf cleanup and gutter maintenance, a comprehensive fall prep inspection should go further.

At Modern Home Inspections, exterior inspections are an integral part of our comprehensive home inspection service—as a key component in identifying potential risks. Here are six common exterior problems you should inspect before colder temperatures and harsher weather arrive.

1. Roof Condition And Flashing Failures

Connecticut’s changing seasons can take a toll on roofing materials. Look for missing, cracked, or curling shingles, especially around chimneys, skylights, and vents. These problem areas often leak during heavy rains or snow melts. Also check flashing—metal strips that seal edges and joints, which can become loose or rusted over time.

Why it matters: Even minor roof damage can lead to significant water intrusion, mold growth, or insulation damage when snow piles up or rain seeps in during fall storms.

2. Gutter Blockage And Improper Drainage

Clogged or misaligned gutters don’t just cause overflowing water—they can lead to foundation cracks, basement leaks, and damaged siding. Before the leaves fall, make sure your gutters are clear and properly pitched, with downspouts directing water at least 5 feet away from the foundation.

Pro Tip: If water pools near your home after a rainstorm, consider grading adjustments or installing a French drain system.

3. Cracked Or Uneven Driveways And Walkways

Concrete and asphalt surfaces can crack, heave, or become uneven due to fluctuations in moisture and temperature. These trip hazards often worsen as freeze-thaw cycles begin in late fall and winter.

What to do: Look for cracks wider than 1/4 inch, signs of crumbling, or pooling water. Seal more minor cracks now to prevent them from spreading.

4. Siding And Trim Damage

Exterior siding—whether vinyl, wood, or fiber cement—acts as your home’s protective shell. Warped, loose, or rotted sections can allow moisture to enter. Don’t forget to check window trim, door frames, and soffits.

Keep in mind: Damaged siding can lead to insect infestations and wood rot, especially when fall rain and humidity settle in.

5. Peeling Exterior Paint Or Faded Stain

Your home's paint isn’t just for looks—it acts as a barrier against moisture and UV damage. Areas of peeling, bubbling, or cracking paint can expose siding to the elements and accelerate deterioration.

Solution: Scrape and repaint affected areas or consider a full repaint before cold weather sets in, especially on older homes.

6. Foundation And Exterior Wall Gaps

Walk around your home’s perimeter and check for gaps where the foundation meets the siding, or where pipes and wires enter the house. These small openings can invite pests, air drafts, or water infiltration.

Bonus tip: Use weather-resistant caulk or expandable foam to seal gaps before rodents look for warm shelter this fall.
